American Identities: David Levinthal & Chicano Prints
In 2026, H’ART Museum presents two exhibitions in collaboration with the Smithsonian American Art Museum. American Myth & Memory: David Levinthal Photographs opens on Saturday 14 February, followed by Radical Histories: Chicano Prints from the Smithsonian American Art Museum in April.
The exhibitions offer visitors a dual perspective on how the United States deals with its history and multicultural society. It contributes to greater insight and understanding, especially in these turbulent times.
American Myth & Memory: David Levinthal Photographs

American Myth & Memory: David Levinthal Photographs opens on Saturday 14 February 2026.
David Levinthal (born 1949) explores the role of myths in American visual culture. Using carefully constructed miniature scenes, the artist reveals how stories of power, heroism, and identity are constructed in the United States. From the Wild West to baseball and Barbie.
Levinthal’s photography has never before been shown in the Netherlands. This exhibition marks the first major collaboration between the Smithsonian American Art Museum and a European museum. A significant milestone for cultural cooperation between the United States and the Netherlands.
Radical Histories: Chicano Prints from the Smithsonian American Art Museum
April – 2 September 2026
Radical Histories: Chicano Prints from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the second exhibition in collaboration with the Smithsonian American Art Museum, opens in April 2026.
“Chicanx” or “Chicano” is a gender-neutral term referring to individuals of Mexican heritage in the United States. This exhibition explores how Chicano artists creatively engage with the narratives through which the United States presents its history. Their work reveals that history is not a single, fixed truth.
The exhibition challenges us to reflect on themes such as whiteness, borders, and traditional gender roles. It insights into how a young and diverse society like the United States grapples with its own identity.
American Myth and Memory: David Levinthal Photographs is organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum with generous support from the Margery and Edgar Masinter Exhibitions Fund, the William and Christine Ragland Family Photography Endowment, and the Bernie Stadiem Endowment Fund.
Radical Histories: Chicano Prints from the Smithsonian American Art Museum is organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Generous support has been provided by the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the National Museum of the American Latino.
