The Centre Pompidou, in Paris, hold one of the few collections with works from all periods of this artist’s life. The exhibition displays more than thirty paintings, sculptures, and prints by Matisse, supplemented with work by contemporaries such as George Braque, Picasso, Sonia Delauny, and Le Corbusier, and followers, including Barnett Newman, Ellsworth Kelly, and Mark Rothko.

The exhibition shows how Matisse not only innovated painting, but also influenced the art world of his time and beyond. His search for color, form, and emotion made him one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. It is no coincidence that Picasso said, “No matter how you look at it, in the end there is only Matisse.
