Benjamin Herman
Saxophonist and musical omnivore Benjamin Herman has been one of the most prolific musicians of his generation for over thirty years. Since the 1990s, he has performed all over the world and released more than fifty albums with his band New Cool Collective and as a solo artist. His remarkably diverse musical output includes traditional jazz, punk jazz, film scores, and postmodern interpretations of the work of composer Misha Mengelberg.
The Square Cats
The acoustic band The Square Cats is a quartet with a passion for Gypsy jazz and upbeat, danceable vintage music. The band consists of two guitarists (rhythm and lead), one saxophonist, and one vocalist. The Square Cats were discovered while playing outdoors at Kattenburgerplein in Amsterdam and have since grown into a full-fledged jazz band. Hence the name “Square” (plein) and “Cats” from Kattenburgerplein.
During their live performances, The Square Cats maintain strong interaction with each other and with the audience (which is almost inevitable with this kind of music). Their repertoire ranges from bossa nova to 1930s jazz. The Square Cats mainly perform covers and sing-along material, but also include a handful of original songs—ranging from romantic ballads to danceable jazz tunes.
